Tofu Hambaagu (Vegan, Gluten free)
Tofu Hambagu Recipe- Wafu Hambagu Without the Meat
Vegan, Gluten Free- Delicious with grains, rice, or salad! Excellent vegan protein source
Our Tofu Hambagu recipe is inspired by the quintessential Japanese Western style dishes. It may be eaten as a main dish, side dish or also makes a great burger patty. Some may eat this as a tofu hamburger steak or as a tofu hamburger between buns. Prep & cook time: 20 minutes
Ingredients (for the patty)
- 1/2 medium firm tofu (approximately 200g)
- 1/2 cup quinoa cooked in vegetable stock
- 1/4 cup gluten free/vegan panko (bread crumbs)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1/2 onion
- 1-2 clove garlic
- 1 tbsp grapeseed oil for pan frying
- 1 tsp sesame oil for sautéing onion and garlic
Directions (for the patty)
- Sauté minced onion and garlic in sesame oil
- make sure water is drained and pat dry tofu with paper towel
- put tofu through a food processor or hand blender until pasty
- mix quinoa, panko, salt and pepper, and sautéed onion and garlic
- add tofu
- mix with hands until well combined
- make a patty and shape.
- pan fry 4-5 minutes each side until golden
Ingredients (for the sauce)
- 2/3 cups water boiled with konbu (sea kelp) or dashi granules
- 2 tsp tamari soy sauce (Gluten free)
- 1/2 tsp shredded ginger
- 1/2 tsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp agar powder or pure cornstarch
Directions (for the sauce)
- bring all ingredients to a boil
- take konbu out
- simmer for 2 minutes
- add pure cornstarch or agar powder to make thick
- pour over Hambaagu right before eating
*to make burger patties add your favorite spices such as paprika, thyme, hot pepper, herbs.
